Georgetown University Students Welcome Congressman Al Green as Featured Special Guest Honoring Slavery Remembrance Day
(Washington D.C.) — On Sunday, September 10, 2023, Congressman Al Green will be a featured special guest invited by students from Georgetown University for their upcoming event, “Everyone Has A Story.” This program will showcase an evening of enlightened speakers and curated musical interludes dedicated to honoring Slavery Remembrance Day and recognizing the profound contributions of our Black forefathers in shaping American history. The event will be located at Georgetown University’s Gaston Hall – 3700 O Street NW, Washington D.C. 20057 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST.
This event will be hosted by Georgetown University students and is a collaborative effort with Congressman Al Green. The focus will be on the mission of the U.S. House of Representatives to commemorate Slavery Remembrance Day. The program will give tribute to individuals who endured the horrors of slavery, as well as mark the first arrival of enslaved Africans in Virginia in 1619 aboard the ship called The White Lion. Georgetown acknowledges its historical connection to slavery, having sold 272 enslaved Africans to help pay off the university’s debts. In response, the university has committed to the Descendants Truth and Reconciliation Foundation, funding community-based projects within descendant communities with an annual contribution of $400,000.
Congressman Al Green will attend as a special guest speaker sharing insights on his Conscience Agenda and Slavery Remembrance Day. The proposed legislative package seeks to establish a Slavery Remembrance Day on August 20th annually to commemorate the victims of slavery. It also aims to award Congressional Gold Medals to the enslaved, initiate a Department of Reconciliation, and authorize the Securities and Exchange Atonement Act. Congressman Green’s agenda introduces resolutions honoring the 25th Army Corps for their role in liberating thousands of enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas, and pays tributes to Nat Turner and John Brown. Congressman Green will conclude with a Slavery Remembrance Day Ceremony memorializing the enslaved with active participation from the audience.
“In collaboration with Georgetown students, we are resolute in our mission to commemorate Slavery Remembrance Day. It is our collective duty to confront the past, recognize the legacy of slavery, and pay homage to those who suffered from slavery, the great American crime against humanity,” Congressman Green stated.
