Congressman Al Green, Who Secured Over $77 Million for Sims Bayou, Celebrates Opening of New Greenway Path Along Sims Bayou

April 30, 2022

(Houston, TX) — On Saturday, April 30, 2022, Congressman Al Green released the following statement:

“Since 1976, the Houston Parks Board has been a dedicated organization striving to improve parks and greenspaces in the greater Houston area. I am honored to celebrate with them the unveiling of a new greenway path along Sims Bayou, which is part of their Bayou Greenways project aiming to connect 150-miles of trails along Houston’s main waterways.”

“During my time in Congress, I am proud to have secured over $77 million in federal funding for Sims Bayou, including for work on recreational trails, flood protection, and environmental mitigation. Out of the federal funds secured over the years for Sims Bayou, $18 million were granted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to construct a trail segment that connects to the new greenway path unveiled today.”

“The combination of federal funds, private donations, contributions by the Kinder Foundation, and efforts by the Houston Parks Board have been instrumental in promoting healthier lifestyles among Houstonians by encouraging walking, biking, and hiking. I look forward to continue making our city more outdoor-friendly, repurposing underutilized green spaces, and creating safe routes to homes, schools, jobs, and businesses for all.”
