Congressman Al Green Thanks President Biden for Visit to Houston in the Aftermath of Winter Storm Uri

February 26, 2021

(Houston, TX) – On Friday, February 26, 2021, Congressman Al Green released the following statement:

“As the Greater Houston area and the entire state of Texas work to recover from the devastation of Winter Storm Uri, it was my esteemed privilege to welcome our nation’s president to our great city to assess the circumstances and to support us during this unprecedented time,” stated Congressman Al Green, who serves as Chair of the Texas Congressional Democratic Delegation. “I and my fellow Members of Congress in Texas are working to cultivate legislative solutions for disaster recovery and mitigation in the wake of this severe winter weather event. I and other local leaders met President Biden at Ellington Field, not only welcoming him to our great city, but welcoming his invaluable leadership and oversight as we embark upon the journey to recovery.”

Congressman Green added, “During the President’s visit, I and my Houston delegation colleagues accompanied him to the Harris County Emergency Operations Center for an overview of disaster response efforts as well as the Houston Food Bank for a briefing on their storm relief efforts. We ended the day at NRG Park, located in the Ninth Congressional District which I proudly serve in Congress. At NRG, President Biden saw up close the need for this federally supported vaccine supersite as well as the appreciation for his sound leadership in announcing this site. The vaccination supersite at NRG has been designated to serve vulnerable populations most in need of vaccination accessibility and will help to save lives by offering full vaccination to 126,000 Houstonians.”

Congressman Green – who represents portions of Harris and Fort Bend counties – concluded, “We are truly at the crossroads of two crises that have exacerbated disparities for marginalized communities. We are coping with the crisis of Uri and combatting the global coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than a half-million people in America alone. This is why I must express my sincerest gratitude to our nation’s president for prioritizing this visit in the midst of everything going on with our nation during his first 100 days in office. Thank you, President Biden, for your compassionate leadership for Houston and the entire state of Texas during this tumultuous time.”
