Congressman Al Green Takes Action and Calls Upon All People of Goodwill to Take a Stand

May 27, 2022

(Houston, TX) — On Friday, May 27, 2022, Congressman Al Green released the following statement:

“In the aftermath of the massacre in Uvalde earlier this week, there are many questions/issues that we must address. The American people need to know why was the gunman inside Robb Elementary School for an hour before authorities moved in and eliminated a lethal threat. Why do we allow 18 year-olds in the United States to buy deadly weapons of war? Why do we allow weapons made for war to liter the streets of America? Why is the National Rifle Association (NRA) having a convention in our grieving state just days after the slaughter of 19 babies?”

“These are issues that we must confront not only for our sake but for the sake of posterity. This is why, as the Chair of the Texas Democratic Congressional Delegation, I have sent a letter to the FBI stressing the need for a federal independent investigation into the Uvalde massacre, the deadliest school shooting in Texas history. The grieving families of Uvalde, as well as the entire nation, deserve to know exactly how and why this tragedy occurred, so that we can prevent it from occurring again.”

“This is also why I am supporting legislation to remove lethal weapons of war from communities across the United States of America and I urge others to join me. I am calling on the chambers of commerce, clergy, school boards, and all people of goodwill who have not taken a stand to demand that AR-15s and similar weapons of war be banned in the United States. I am also pleading with the public to join me in openly condemning the NRA convention taking place in Houston, Texas within days of 19 children being massacred in our sister city of Uvalde. It is highly inappropriate and shameful for it to be held in the wake of a massacre as families struggle to come to terms with the tragedy. Now is the time for us to take up the cause for liberty and justice for all, and end the mass murders of babies in schools, innocent people while shopping, and worshippers while worshipping. Not on our watch. Enough is enough.”
