Congressman Al Green Sworn into 117th Congress, Backed by Diverse, Women-Led Congressional Staff

January 5, 2021

(Washington, D.C.) – On Tuesday, January 5, 2021, Congressman Al Green released the following statement:

“It is my esteemed privilege to be sworn into the 117th Congress to serve the people of the Ninth Congressional District of Texas as well as the whole of America. Guided by my love for country and my desire for a just society, I will continue to fight for a world where the powerful will be just and the powerless will receive justice,” stated Congressman Al Green, who first took the oath of office to represent TX-09 in Congress in 2005. “This Congress is especially notable as I am joined by my new Chief of Staff, Niha Razi. As I welcome her to this new role, I thank my outgoing Chief of Staff Attorney Rob Eskridge for his work in our congressional office and for his service to the people of the Ninth Congressional District of Texas.”

Congressman Green added, “Niha Razi received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago John Marshall Law School. She has been a member of my congressional staff, affectionately known as the Green Team, since 2018, previously serving as an AIPACS Fellow, Legislative Assistant, Senior Legislative Assistant, and, most recently, Deputy Chief of Staff. She will co-lead with my longtime, dedicated District Director Rachael Rodriguez.”

“Under their leadership is a stellar, majority-minority staff that also includes women in key leadership positions: Legislative Director Tenzin Pelkyi, District Administrator Crystal Webster, and Communications Director Kwentoria A. Williams. The congressional staff is comprised of Asian American, Black/African-American, and Latinx/Hispanic professionals, who speak multiple languages and practice an array of religions. Having been duly elected to serve a constituency where the ballot is printed in four languages, complete with Houston’s ‘International District,’ it has been of paramount importance that my staff be enriched with the diversity that I cherish and am honored to serve. I am confident that as we enter this new Congress, the gender, cultural, religious, and educational diversity of the Green Team will yield the creation of forward-thinking, inclusive policy ideas, grounded in the noble American ideal of liberty and justice FOR ALL.”
