Congressman Al Green Re-Introduces Original Pride Month Resolution

(Washington, D.C.) – On Tuesday, June 22, 2021, Congressman Al Green released the following statement in commemoration and celebration of June as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month:

“Today, I proudly re-introduced the Original LGBTQIA+ Pride Month Resolution. I hold this resolution near to my heart, as I consider myself an ally in the pursuit of equality for our lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex, and asexual friends,” stated Congressman Al Green, who first introduced this resolution as the Original LGBT Pride Month Resolution in 2013. “The foundation of the celebratory and commemorative Pride events held globally each June is rooted in the punishment and intolerance of LGBTQIA+ people for simply being themselves. Ignited by the righteous indignation of two transgender women of color – Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, the first Pride was an act of resistance in 1969 that ensued after a police raid of a New York City gay bar, the Stonewall Inn.”

Congressman Green, one of 170 members of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus, added, “Although there has been much progress in the more than five decades since Stonewall, we cannot lose our fervor in the fight to ensure that LGBTQIA+ individuals in America have the same liberties as every other person in our nation. Our work is not done until all who identify with the LGBTQIA+ community can marry, acquire an education, work, patronize businesses, and, most importantly, live, without fear.”
