Congressman Al Green to Join State Senator Molly Cook, Elected Officials, and Community Leaders to Address Attacks on Women’s Reproductive Rights in Texas

October 16, 2024

(Houston, TX) — On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, Congressman Al Green will join State Senator Molly Cook,Commissioner Lesley Briones, State Representative Ron Reynolds, and esteemed community leaders in a press conference. They will confront the continued attack on women's control over their bodies and access to reproductive healthcare across all branches of government.

Congressman Al Green stated, "Women should not be denied the right to control their own bodies. Denying bodily autonomy to control women is antiquated and unacceptable. Since the 2021 ban on abortion care, a September 20, 2024 NBC News article reports a 56% increase in maternal mortality in Texas. In Texas, under Senate Bill 8, it is a criminal offense to assist a woman with an abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy unless the woman is experiencing a medical emergency. We must reinstate reproductive care and address the alarming impact of abortion restrictions on women's health in Texas and nationwide, so as to prevent a woman’s miscarriage after 6 weeks of pregnancy from being viewed as a suspicious event and her body viewed as a crime scene. The long arm of the law has no place in a woman’s womb.”
