Congressman Al Green Introduces Original Black History Month Resolution of 2022
(Houston, TX) – On Friday, February 25, 2022, Congressman Al Green (TX-09) released the following statement:
“Black History Month is a time to celebrate and bring attention to the too-often overlooked contributions of African Americans to the society, history, and culture of the United States. This year’s theme of ‘Health and Wellness’ highlights the achievements and leadership of Black Americans in the medical field, as well as the progress yet to be made for the millions who disproportionately suffer from a variety of health challenges,” Congressman Al Green shared.
“According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the infant mortality rate for Black Americans has decreased by more than 20 percent over a period of nearly 30 years. Furthermore, the last few decades have also seen dramatic declines in overall cancer death rates for both Black men and women. These breakthroughs are worthy of distinction, observation, and celebration, and are evidence of the shrinking racial health disparity that exists in our health care system.”
“However, Black communities across our nation continue to endure inequalities in many areas including income, incarceration, and education, that disproportionately impact their health and wellbeing. Furthermore, Black individuals have historically been denied the same access as their White counterparts to medical tools, services, and facilities, and have experienced higher rates of hospitalization and deaths related to COVID-19.”
Congressman Al Green, whose Black History Month legislation is cosponsored by over 140 Members of Congress, concluded, “Black history is American history and there is no better time than the month of February to focus on that which we should highlight every day. I am proud to support this year’s theme of ‘Health and Wellness’ and salute all my colleagues for joining me in this resolution to recognize and commemorate Black History Month.”
