Congressman Al Green Delivers $1.6 Million in Federal Funding to Gulfgate Redevelopment Authority to Make School Routes Safer as We Fight to Save Our Schools
(Houston, TX) — On Wednesday, August 30, 2023, Congressman Al Green will present a symbolic check for $1.6 million for the federal funding that Gulfgate Redevelopment Authority will receive for intersection safety and mobility improvements. As we fight to save our schools, we must also make school routes safer for our students. These funds will benefit Hartman Middle School, Alcott Elementary School, Stuart Park, F.M. Law Park, as well as the Sims Bayou Hike and Bike Trail.
This project will increase safety, mobility, and economic development between the intersections of Waltrip Street and Belfort Avenue, as well as Crestmont Street to Wayside Drive. These intersections have a history of some of the most frequent vehicular crashes involving pedestrians in the region. The improvements will include essential features such as crosswalks, accessible ramps, pedestrian signals, and median refuge islands. In addition, the project seeks to construct hybrid beacons, bicycle access upgrades, new sidewalks, and shared path connections. This announcement corresponds with the Houston Independent School District (HISD) students returning to school this week. This plan aligns with the City of Houston’s High Injury Network and the City’s Vision Zero Plan, which targets the ambitious goal of eliminating traffic-related fatalities across the city.
“The federal funding provided will help facilitate the transforming of our city’s transportation landscape, emphasize the safety of residents, and help with the reduction of traffic deaths in Houston,” Congressman Al Green stated. “These enhancements will help decrease the risks of accidents pedestrians face and also improve economic growth and mobility. Because student safety is of utmost importance, providing safe streets for them must be a priority.”
