Congressman Al Green – in Conjunction with Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) and Community Leader and Civil Rights Activist Sandra Hines – Announces Two Apartment-Based COVID-19 Testing Sites in Sunnyside, Open to All, Especially Seniors

August 19, 2020

(Houston, TX) — On Thursday, August 20, 2020, Congressman Al Green will launch two free, apartment-based, walk-up testing sites in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Houston, Texas. Congressman Green released the following statement:

“Sunnyside is a predominantly Black, senior citizen neighborhood that demands equitable and convenient resources especially in the wake of the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic. As a community that once had the second highest rate of infection in Harris County, it is key that testing sites are made widely accessible to communities that display an apparent need,” Congressman Green – who represents the Sunnyside neighborhood and its residents in Congress – stated. “After hearing about a need for testing among senior residents from community leader and civil rights activist – Ms. Sandra Hines, she and I worked closely to launch free COVID-19 testing sites across Sunnyside.”

Congressman Green continued, “The new walk-up testing sites in Sunnyside are conveniently located within apartment communities and will serve residents who may have difficulty getting to a local drive-thru site or who may fear being too far away from home.”

“The coronavirus pandemic has impacted communities across the Greater Houston area in devastating ways. Addressing the need for testing and contact tracing in communities like Sunnyside is essential to ensuring that we defeat COVID-19. With intentional, strategically planned testing efforts, we can work together to preserve the health of our communities.”

Congressman Green concluded by saying, “I must thank Chief Nim Kidd and the Texas Division of Emergency Management for assistance in launching these sites and several others across the state. I must also thank Ms. Sandra Hines – affectionately known as the ‘Mayor of Sunnyside’ – for her unwavering commitment to ensuring Sunnyside has the resources it needs to thrive.”

Details for each apartment community testing site are listed below. Testing will be provided on a walk-up basis and is free of charge. No symptoms or referrals are required.
