Congressman Al Green Commemorates LGBTQ Pride

June 26, 2019

(Washington, D.C.) – On Wednesday, June 26, 2019, Congressman Al Green released the following statement on the introduction of a resolution encouraging the celebration of the month of June as LGBTQ Pride Month:

“The antithesis of hate and oppression, Pride has become a symbol of unity and inclusion for LGBTQ individuals. Although members of this community have always been here and contributed to our society in astounding ways, their stories were often overlooked or cast aside.”

“This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots which became the catalyst for the Pride movement as we now know it. Sparked by a 1969 police raid of New York City’s gay bar Stonewall Inn, the riots forced America to wake up and pay attention to the injustices LBGTQ individuals faced at the hands of law enforcement.”

“I am proud to sponsor the original Pride resolution in Congress, which honors and recognizes the lives and legacies of LGBTQ persons and allies who have forged a more inclusive and equitable America for all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender. I salute the work of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer brothers, sisters, and gender non-conforming friends advocating on the front lines of this just cause, and I look forward to continuing to work toward this change with my colleagues in Congress.”
