October 2, 2023

(Houston, TX) — On Monday, October 2, 2023, Congressman Al Green delivered remarks at the Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston, followed by the unveiling of a commemorative granite stone, marking the museum’s inauguration. This landmark institution is dedicated to promoting Mahatma Gandhi’s enduring legacy and universal values.

According to information provided by the Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston, believed to be the first of its kind in North America, occupies a 3-acre parcel of land. The museum’s architectural design was inspired by five different National Gandhi Museums across India. It serves as a beacon of inspiration and champions the principles of truth, non-violence, peace, love, and service advocated by Mahatma Gandhi. It highlights the power of non-violent conflict resolution, exemplified through the stories of global peace leaders who were inspired by Gandhi’s civil rights and social justice movement, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, Muhammad Ali, Cesar Chavez, and more.

Notably, the Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston will also serve as a cultural and educational hub for Texas students in grades 6th through 12th. The museum will offer curriculum-based tours aligned with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), focusing on World Cultures, Geography, History, U.S. History, Language Arts/Reading, World Literature, and Art. Students visiting the museum will have the opportunity to explore and tour three galleries led by docents. The objective of these educational programs is to inspire the next generation of leaders to advocate for peace and social justice through action.

“Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy remains deeply relevant in today’s world, where we face pressing global challenges. From military conflicts to social injustice movements, his teachings offer guidance for peaceful solutions and social change,” said Congressman Al Green. “As we confront contemporary issues, let us be inspired by the Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston and remember the principles exemplified through his life to guide us to a more just world.”
