Congressman Al Green Expresses Concern for the Plight of U.S. Troops, American Citizens, and Afghan People

August 20, 2021

(Houston, TX) – On Friday, August 20, 2021, Congressman Al Green released the following statement:

“The United States sent troops to Afghanistan in the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.  Nearly 20 years since the War on Terror in Afghanistan began, President Biden has courageously ended our nation’s longest war and has committed to bringing our troops home,” Congressman Al Green said in a statement. “Now, we are facing a very sensitive circumstance. As we withdraw our armed forces from the country, we must ensure the safe return of not only our American citizens and remaining troops, but also ensure that those who fought and worked alongside us are not left in harm’s way.”

Congressman Green added, “Millions of Afghans, who exemplified loyalty and courage as American allies, currently wait in the shadow of uncertainty. We must reciprocate with loyalty and courage during this difficult time.  We cannot allow our hands to be tied with red tape preventing their safe and immediate evacuation.”
