FEMA Evacuation Guidelines:

  • Keep a full tank of gas in your car if an evacuation seems likely. Gas stations may be closed during emergencies and unable to pump gas during power outages. Plan to take one car per family to reduce congestion and delay
  • Listen to a battery-powered radio and follow local evacuation instructions.
  • Leave early enough to avoid being trapped by severe weather.
  • Be alert for washed-out roads and bridges. Do not drive into flooded areas.
  • Stay away from downed power lines.
  • Unplug electrical equipment, such as radios and televisions, and small appliances, such as toasters and microwaves. Leave freezers and refrigerators plugged in unless there is a risk of flooding.

Be Alert of Scams/Fraud

FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance (DSA) crews, housing inspectors and other officials are working in areas impacted by the hurricane. They carry official identification badges with photo IDs. FEMA and U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) representatives never charge applicants for disaster assistance, inspections or help in filling out applications.

Don't believe anyone who promises a disaster grant in return for payment. They don’t represent FEMA.

Don't give your banking information to a person claiming to be a FEMA housing inspector. FEMA inspectors are never authorized to collect your personal financial information.

FEMA personnel are working in communities to help people apply for disaster assistance. They carry FEMA photo identification and never ask for, or accept, money. If anyone asks you for money in return for FEMA services, they do not represent FEMA. If you did not apply for assistance but receive a letter from FEMA, please call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362.
