Apr 18, 2020

(Houston, TX) — On Saturday, April 18, 2020, Congressman Al Green joined the Alliance for Disaster Relief’s at their food and safety kit distribution. Congressman Green released the following statement:

Congressman Green said, “During this unprecedented global health crisis, many unsung heroes have risen to the occasion to help people and communities in need. I have consistently commended grocery store workers and the workers distributing food to students and families at local schools. However, community organizations are also among the unsung heroes at the forefront of helping to defeat coronavirus. Groups across the Greater Houston area have pooled their resources to donate to entities on the front lines of combatting the coronavirus crisis. The Alliance for Disaster Relief is one such unsung hero.”

“The Alliance for Disaster Relief has shown a great commitment to ending this pandemic,” the Houston Congressman added. Green’s Ninth Congressional District includes portions of Fort Bend County and Harris County. In cooperation with Fort Bend County leaders, he hosted a donation drive to collect PPE for frontline medical workers and first responders earlier this week. “The Alliance for Disaster Relief has already donated a full pallet of personal protective equipment (PPE) at the donation drive benefitting Fort Bend County, Missouri City, and Stafford. Today, this group has distributed food and PPE safety kits to 500 families and provided checks in the amount of $5,000 and $10,000 to help further the relief efforts of the Houston Food Bank and Project C.U.R.E. respectively. I am honored to stand with the Alliance for Disaster Relief and many other unsung heroes that are working to serve the community during the COVID-19 crisis.”

The event was coordinated by the president of the Houston Karachi Sister City Association, Mr. Muhammad Sheikh. He stated, “The Alliance for Disaster Relief is a collaborative of community organizations that has launched a massive COVID-19 relief effort with the support of Mr. S. Javaid Anwar, Houston Karachi Sister City Association, Ibn Sina Foundation, and the Consulate General of Pakistan-Houston. Today, we were honored to serve more than 500 families with our one-week supply food box and our PPE safety kits. We are especially grateful for Congressman Al Green’s collaboration in making this happen. We want to also thank the Houston Food Bank for their support. The United States is the adopted home for many of us, and it is time for us to stand with our fellow Americans by serving our communities during this time of need.”
