Mar 13, 2020

(Washington, D.C.) – On Friday, March 13, 2020, Congressman Al Green along with state, county, municipal, and school board elected officials held a press call to announce updates regarding COVID-19. Congressman Green released the following statement:

“With the World Health Organization’s official recognition of COVID-19 as a pandemic coupled with the confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Greater Houston area, all levels of government must work together to test for the virus, properly treat affected persons, as well as work to prevent further spread,” Congressman Al Green indicated on a press call Friday morning. “This is why I am collaborating with state, county, municipal, and school board officials serving constituents of the Fort Bend area of the Ninth Congressional District. We shared information on ways that each official is working to ensure our communities are protected. Our virtual collaboration speaks to the partnership that the health and safety of the public currently demand. We must demonstrate that we can practice social distancing and still work together effectively to mitigate the risks of community spread during this time of crisis.”

Congressman Green told call participants that he would support and vote for the “Families First Coronavirus Response Act.” He further asserted, “As our Nation prepares to combat the spread and lethality of COVID-19, this legislation will provide much-needed, protective benefits including paid leave and free coronavirus testing. The legislation offers relief measures that would help our communities better prepare for the increasing phenomena of closures and cancellations due to coronavirus risks.”

“As I have consistently held since the beginning of this outbreak, we must only deal in facts, not fear. To this end, I thank the call participants for helping to spread the facts necessary to stop unnecessary fear. The call participants included – State Representative Ron Reynolds (HD-27), Treasurer Bill Rickert (Fort Bend County), County Clerk Laura Richard (Fort Bend County), Mayor Yolanda Ford (Missouri City), Mayor Leonard Scarcella (Stafford), Chancellor Cesar Maldonado (Houston Community College), Superintendent Robert Bostic (Stafford Municipal School District), Dr. David Persse (Houston Health Authority), Chief Lawrence Di Camillo (Stafford Fire Department), Council Member Tony Carbone (Pearland - Position 2), Council Member Alice Chen (Stafford  - Position 1), Trustee Pretta VanDible Stallworth (Houston Community College - District IX), and Chief of Staff Ahmad Alaswad (Fort Bend County Commissioners Court - Precinct 2).
